ABOUT US

Yantai American School(YAS), an international school founded in 2006, is a private day school with a North American curriculum for Preschool-12 grade. approximately 90% of the students are Korean, with a smattering of students from other countries. YAS serves international families in a variety of missions and business communities. Our goal is to provide an excellent education in an enriching environment to the children of expatriates living in the Yantai area. Our motto is to encourage wisdom, elevate intellect, and emphasize excellence.

The strength of YAS, from the very start, has been the excellent quality of teachers we employ. Applicants are assessed on several different major areas including love of children, professionals ability, maturity and perceived flexibility  and cultural adaptation.

TEACHING

For many new YAS teachers, this is not only a first-time teaching experience but also a first to live and work in a foreign country. Understandably, potential YAS teachers have questions about working and living abroad.
Below you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?

All applicants need to love kids, have a bachelors degree, and be in agreement with our

statement of faith.

DO I NEED TO
BE A CERTIFIED TEACHER?

No.  It's more important that you love kids and have a passion to (learn to) teach.  We can help teach you to teach, but we can't teach you to love kids.

HOW LONG IS A CONTRACT?

A typical contract includes twenty-two pay periods, which is paid at the first of each month.  The first day of work fluctuates each year, but generally starts at the beginning of August, with pay beginning September 1.

WHAT'S THE COMPENSATION?

All staff are given a base salary of 8,500RMB each pay period, an apartment (and a roommate for those under 30), international health insurance, all visas after arrival, Chinese lessons, lunch during work days, and K-12 education for your children.  You're responsible for your flights and initial visa.

WHAT'S THE COST OF LIVING?

Daily expenses are considerably less than in America, and since you don't need to pay for housing, insurance, or a car, and lunch is provided during school days, teachers are able to save a considerable amount each month. Teachers typically are able to save 35-75% of their salary.

WHAT'S AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL?

International schools serve the children of expatriates (people living in a foreign country).  YAS students come from all over the world (South Korea, France, South Africa, Dubai, Canada, US, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Japan, Denmark, Indonesia, and Romania).

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Flexible individuals who actively support their leadership. Need to be team players and have the ability and desire to adjust to life in China. Must have a Christ-centered philosophy that dramatically impacts their character. Will put the company's priority of serving kids above their own.

IS IT DIFFICULT LIVING IN CHINA?

All staff members will go through culture shock and have days where they struggle. Most find the difficulties and challenges to be incredible opportunities for growth. Individuals who are rigid and inflexible will may have a more difficult time adjusting to a new culture.

WHAT'S A TYPICAL CLASS SIZE?

In elementary, they typically range from 8 - 15 students, and elementary teachers often have a teaching assistant.  Secondary core classes typically range from are 10 - 18 students.

WHAT ARE THE WORKING HOURS?

Teachers typically are at the school M-F for 8 hours and have 5+ teaching hours/day. Many find they need additional time outside of school for planning and grading. This isn't an 8-to-5 job and requires individuals with a strong work ethic.

WHAT ARE THE COMMUNITIES LIKE?

The school environment is incredibly positive, and, there is a real focus on building a strong community and team dynamic. YAS encourages applicants who are offered contracts to connect with current teachers to learn more about the school and living in China.

CAN I VISIT HOME OR TRAVEL?

Yes.  Typically, teachers have a few weeks paid winter vacation as well as 6-8 weeks paid summer vacation. Teachers may want to visit home or travel abroad during this time.

DO I NEED TO KNOW CHINESE?

No.  If you want to take lessons, they are provided to teachers for free.

Do you have additional questions?  Please Contact Us.  We'd love to tell you more about it.

"Living in China and working at Yantai American School provided a unique and exciting opportunity to experience life in a different culture, apply my current skills and abilities in a new and challenging environment, and, learn ways to communicate and relate to people from diverse cultural backgrounds."

“I’m so happy I chose to work with OES. As a recent college graduate who had never traveled overseas, I was a little afraid to move halfway around the globe.  The staff and students at YAS are simply amazing!  I felt welcomed, accepted and supported right away.”

“The students at YAS are amazing! And, when I needed help or advice for my classroom, the administrators and other teachers were there to assist and guide me through every step of the way.  I loved it so much that I accepted an offer to stay beyond the initial two year contract.”
